Mansion Tours

After Daniel Guggenheim’s death in 1930, his wife Florence closed Hempstead House and built the fourth mansion on the property, Mille Fleur, a smaller waterside home for herself. Hempstead House’s furnishings were sold in 1940, and Florence opened the mansion to children evacuated from the war in Europe until foster homes could be found for them. In 1942, she donated 162 acres of the estate to the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences. The U.S. Navy purchased the property in 1946 for a Naval Training Device Center, and, in 1971, the property was acquired by Nassau County, NY. The Market Mews, 741 Mildred Avenue, Los Angeles CA.

CulinArt Group Catering Collection offers the renowned services of three distinct lifestyle catering brands. After Guggenheim’s death in 1930, his wife Florence closed off Hempstead House and built a small water-side home, Mille Fleur, for herself–the fourth mansion on the property (the third mansion was Falaise). In 1942, Florence donated 162 acres of the estate to the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences, who in turn sold it to the U.S Navy and held it until 1967. Afterward, the estate was declared a surplus by the U.S government, and in 1971, the property was given to Nassau County.

Upcoming Events

The Wurlitzer is played by Alan Lush for various events held in the mansion. Intriguingly, the initial plan called for a castle that would be the replica of Kilkenny Castle in Ireland. However, the Gould was displeased with the design so it was decided that another house would be built as the main living quarters. After the completion of the house, the estate was sold to Daniel Guggenheim, at which point the name of the main house was changed to Hempstead House. But more importantly the service was outstanding, and the food provided by Philip Stone Caterers was simply amazing in both taste and it’s unique style. The two lead people Emily and Mo were extremely attentive to all our needs throughout the whole planning process. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a great wedding reception. Truly IncredibleEverything about this venue is incredible and the staff is the icing on the top. My husband and I had our wedding here in August – from the moment I inquired with Sands Point in 2021 they were so attentive. Their professionalism, flexibility and friendliness was so refreshing and made the planning process a breeze.

Florence donated 162 acres of the estate, including Hempstead House and Castle Gould to the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences in 1942. This was once both an indoor garden and aviary for the Guggenheims, filled over 150 rare orchids and plants, as well as caged exotic birds. At this point, the mansion had been shuttered, and was only opened at the Guggenheim’s request. Life Magazine did a story in their July 22, 1940 issue about the situation (a month shy of 70 years ago).

Hempstead House is an exemplary 50,000 square-foot, Tudor-style mansion that boasts 40 rooms and an imposing vaulted ceiling that incarnates the opulence and glamor of the roaring 1920s. The walnut-paneled library was emulated from that of the palace of King James I, while the sunken Palm Court once contained 150 species of rare orchids, plants, and potted trees. My daughter recently had her wedding and reception at the Hempstead House, part of the Sands Point Preserve. The place itself is beautiful and has a spectacular view.

Financier Howard Gould, son of railroad robber baron Jay Gould, created the estate by purchasing the undeveloped land in 1900 and 1901. Castle Gould, a massive 100,000-square-foot medieval castle, modeled after Ireland’s Kilkenny Castle, was completed in 1902. It was an attempt to please his wife, actress Katherine Clemmons. But she was not pleased, so he built a second mansion across the property, the Tudor-style home, Hempstead House – a more intimate 50,000-square-foot mansion with a 60-foot-tall entry foyer. Sadly, their marriage ended in a divorce that was played out in the press with Gould accusing Clemmons of having an affair with William F. Cody (known in Old West lore as Buffalo Bill). Not only is the space at Hempstead House incredible, the team is as well.

The rooms of Hempstead House and Castle Gould are spectacular settings for bar/bat mitzvahs, storybook sweet sixteens, anniversary parties and even proms. Following her husband’s death, Florence no longer wanted to live in the house. She built a smaller house on the property for herself, and in 1940, she opened Hempstead House to refugee children from Europe ranging in age from 13 months to 10 years old.

I’m a fairly particular person, and I immediately recognized and appreciated Moe’s attention to detail. Moe knew just how to bring our own individual personalities shine through every selection and detail. Both Moe and Emily responded to every email and call within an impressively quick timeframe, and always offered to help make everything easier for us and our families. We had plenty of questions (big and small) and they always always aimed to please. Moe lead us through every option and helped us bring in additional ways to really make the night about us. From recommendations on a band and bringing in additional furniture, to the cordial selection for our espresso bar, to the placement of the pool table for our after party, he made everything so special.

The food was incredible, from cocktail hour in the gardens to dinner. Highly recommend Hempstead House for an amazing wedding. From the portico, enter the mansion’s sixty-foot-tall entry foyer with stained glass windows and an equally impressive staircase.

All were brought here by Mrs. Charles S. Payson, cousin of Lady Baillie. There once was an organ on the ground floor, and you’d assume the pipes above are all the remains. However, they’re fakes, installed just for show. The sound actually reverberated through openings in the floor.
